The Foundation of the Carlo Besta Neurological Institute, is, under Italian Civil Law, a “Foundation of Participation,” in which representatives within the Board of Governors play a prominent role. Members of the Board of Governors include representatives of the Italian Ministry of Health, the Region of Lombardy, and the Municipality of Milan − all of which are Founders of the Besta Foundation.

The organs of the Besta Foundation are the President, the Board of Governors, the General Manager, the Scientific Director, and the Board of Auditors.

The Carlo Besta Neurological Institute, first established in 1918, was designated by the Italian government as an Institute of Research and Treatment (IRCCS) in 1981. On July 15, 2006 the Institute transformed into the Foundation of the Carlo Besta Neurological Institute, IRCCS, in accordance with Italian Legislative Decree No. 288 of 2003. The activity of the Foundation is governed by its Statute approved by Italian Ministry of Health, April 28, 2006.

The Foundation of the Carlo Besta Neurological Institute, IRCCS, is a regional and national centre of excellence for the treatment of neurological diseases, and also undertakes research aimed to improve the diagnosis and treatment of these diseases. The Foundation treats oncological, degenerative and rare neurological diseases affecting both children and adults, and is highly active in the field of neurosurgery. It is a regional and national referral centre for several specific neurological conditions.

The fundamental aims of the Foundation are to provide high quality, ethical and efficient care and treatment to its patients, making use of the results of it own research and that of others, always putting the interests of patient first. In fulfilment of these aims, the Foundation provides care and treatment to patients, carries out clinical and basic research to improve treatment and diagnosis (translational research), provides professional training and educational programmes (including those for pre and postgraduate university students) and develops new managerial techniques to improve health care provision and research efficiency.
