The Istituto Superiore di Sanità (Higher Institute of Health), also ISS, is a public institution that, as the leading technical-scientific body of the Italian National Health Service performs research, trials, control, counseling, documentation and training for public health. The Institute is under the supervision of the Ministry of Health

ISS, under the Ministry of Health and is equipped with special structures and legal and scientific autonomy.

ISS tasks are:

  • carrying out research activities in order to protect public health;
  • execution, when required by law, for analytical checks;
  • realization of investigations and surveys of health and hygiene;
  • organization of courses of specialization and updating of health workers graduates;
  • maintenance of the national inventory of chemicals in preventing environmental intoxication;
  • predisposition of research programs in correlation with the national programming.
