Patented Medicine Prices Review Board (PMPRB), Canada

Last updated: 26.09.2017

The Patented Medicine Prices Review Board (PMPRB) is an independent quasi-judicial body established by Parliament in 1987 under the Patent Act (Act). Although the PMPRB is part of the Health Portfolio, because of its quasi-judicial responsibilities it carries out its mandate at arm’s-length from the Minister of Health, who is responsible for the sections of the Act pertaining to the PMPRB.

The PMPRB is a consumer protection agency with a dual regulatory and reporting mandate. Its regulatory mandate is to ensure that the prices of patented medicines sold in Canada are not excessive. Its reporting mandate is to provide stakeholders with pharmaceutical trends information to help them make informed choices.
