Biopark is more than just a university campus; it also hosts cutting edge technology and industry, with a range of businesses currently operating on the Biopark. The companies are able to grow in an environment where relationships can be built and ideas exchanged with all of those involved in biotech innovation: ULB and UMONS lab facilities and fundamental research, support for new businesses from promotion and research units, hosting facilities, and training in new technologies. Most of the businesses on the Biopark are ULB spin-offs that have been supported by the special environment and structure found therein.
Finding practical applications for our findings is part of the duty of a University to contribute to the economic development of their host regions. The transfer of technology from a lab to a business application, and the protection of intellectual property rights, are essential to this process. There are a variety of structures within the Biopark that work closely with the scientists to provide support throughout the innovation process.
