Company description

PAGB is the UK trade association for manufacturers of branded over-the-counter medicines and food supplements.

Over-the-counter is the term used for medicines that can be bought in pharmacies and in other retail outlets without a prescription. Some of the medicines can only be sold in pharmacies and pharmacists are required to supervise their sales and ask questions before supplying them to customers.

Products and services

Established in 1919, the association was founded to promote responsible consumer healthcare by controlling the advertising of all the medicines of the companies in membership through a code of advertising practice. This remains a core activity for the association although the PAGB Medicines Advertising Code now sits within a legal framework.

For more than 20 years, PAGB’s research and policy development has focused on framing self care as a level of care in the NHS and its policies.

The Department of Health publication ‘Self care – A real choice, Self care support – a practical option’ (2005) defines self care as:

‘…the actions people take for themselves, their children and their families to stay fit and maintain good physical and mental health; meet social and psychological needs; prevent illness or accidents; care for minor ailments and long-term conditions; and maintain health and wellbeing after an acute illness or discharge from hospital.’
