BASG – Federal Office for Safety in Health Care

AGES MEA – Austrian Medicines and Medical Devices Agency

The Federal Office for Safety in Health Care – BASG and the Austrian Medicines and Medical Devices Agency – AGES MEA were set up in January 2006. Their responsibilities include a variety of tasks such as issuing marketing authorization for medicinal products (human and veterinary), assessing the efficacy and safety of medicinal products and medical devices, market surveillance, inspection of manufacturers.

The BASG is directly subordinated to the Austrian Federal Ministry of Health – BMG and thus carries out sovereign tasks. It consists of three members appointed by the Federal Minister of Health.

Fully owned by the Republic of Austria, the AGES MEA is closely linked to the BASG providing it with necessary resources (staff and facilities). When carrying out sovereign activities, the employees of AGES MEA are acting on behalf of the Federal Office  for Safety in Health Care BASG.
