The National Superintendence of Health – Susalud – is a public body under the Ministry of Health with technical, operational, administrative, economic, financial autonomy charged with registering, authorizing, monitoring administering institutions of health assurance funds as well as supervising the institutions that provide health services in the area of competence.
It is also responsible for registering, authorizing, regulating and supervising the operation of prepaid health agencies and all public, private or mixed entities offering services in the form of regular payment or advance.
It also monitors the value of benefits and interagency consideration for the exchange of services to protect the interests of policyholders.
In exercising its functions Susalud has sanctioning powers.
